There are three basic services I offer.
'The Full Monty'.
For the movie buffs reading this, please do not worry, all my clothes stay on!!
I have found some clients want to learn but have no idea where or how to start growing vegetables. At the initial on-site consultation we will discuss and decide on the size of the garden and the veggies you would like to grow. The raised bed construction would be the second phase, which would be followed by the planting of the varieties you have chosen. I welcome you to be as involved in the process as your time and interest allows. I will walk you through all the steps of planting, irrigation, soil structure, avoidance of plant pests, and when to harvest your vegetables. I will share with you as much of my 40+ years of vegetable growing experience as you wish to know!
'Part timers'
For those of you who would like to have a full-time vegetable garden but perhaps can only commit to one on a part time basis, I can offer you a great part-time option as well. The same basics would apply as to the above noted 'Full Monty' system, whereas I would advise you on proper variety selection for your lifestyle needs and time constraints. We would work together to choose the varieties that fit, and then I would maintain the plants throughout the growing season. Your physical involvement would be entirely up to you, and your desire to learn!
I Just Want Vegetables !!!
For those of you who have no green thumb, no spare time and absolutely no desire to get your hands dirty, I have come to your rescue! I will design, install and plant your raised vegetable garden, tend it with loving care, and even harvest the vegetables as they mature. Your responsibility here would be to simply enjoy the end result!
Raised Beds.
I design and install raised bed gardens for the following reasons;
-
Raised beds have been shown by numerous scientific studies to produce far more than traditional beds. The beds warm sooner in the spring and take longer to cool in the fall therefore extending your growing season.
-
Raised beds are far easier to tend, they are constructed using a wood frame four feet wide which is the optimum width for the average adult to be able to reach across from both sides to tend the veggies.
-
The soil does not get compacted because you do not have to walk on the soil as you work the bed therefore maintain a good air and water flow in the soil.
Micro Irrigation.
This system of delivering water to the vegetable plants and not wasting vast amounts watering is the goal. Rather then soaking whole areas this process will save you at least 70% less water. It is a low volume low pressure system which can be placed discretely throughout your raised beds, and will hardly be noticed.
Micro irrigation has two delivery methods, soaker hose and drip feed heads. The soaker hose is generally used for row crops such as beans, peas, onions and the like. Drip head feeders are plant specific for such plants as tomatoes, peppers etc. The system is automatic and can be set up so it will water your garden completely on its own.
Maintenance visits.
Unless you are prepared to check on your garden at least three times a week, with spot weeding and general maintenance, I would strongly recommend our maintenance program. I will routinely stop by your new garden and perform the tasks no one truly enjoys (weeding, insect removal, general clean-up, individual plant inspection, etc)
Weeds and insect/fungal problems can and will quickly take a hold of your vegetables if they are neglected. Many clients have contacted me for this service which has saved them from ruined gardens.
Monthly Updates.
Each month I will e-mail tips to you on what you should be expecting to see in your veggie garden and what to prepare for in the upcoming month.
For those of you taking a more active interest in your garden I shall be listing varieties which are being recommended by the seed growers for the remainder of the growing season.
Starting from Seed.
2010 I shall be starting many varieties from seed myself. This enables me to supply a more varied choice of plants to you especially in the Heirloom and Rare breeds which we need to keep growing. All my seeds come from growers and vendors who are Certified Organic Producers.
There are so many wonderful varieties available which you will never see in most 'big box' outlets. There are varieties of Tomatoes for instance which can only be described as 'incredible' once you have tasted them but you will never see them in those 'big box' stores. |
